The area is mainly used as a transport hub on journeys toward Jaffna and the north, but its surrounding countryside, reservoirs and local communities also give travellers a quieter view of inland northern Sri Lanka. Vavuniya town is an important road and rail gateway between central Sri Lanka and the far north.
