Puttalam District lies on Sri Lanka’s northwest coast and is known for lagoons, wetlands, beaches and access to Wilpattu National Park. The region suits travellers interested in wildlife, birdwatching, kitesurfing areas and quieter coastal landscapes away from the main southern beach circuit. Kalpitiya, Puttalam Lagoon and the western approaches to Wilpattu are among the district’s main visitor areas. Anawilundawa wetlands and the Chilaw area add birding and cultural interest, while the coast is popular for kitesurfing, dolphin excursions and quieter beach stays.
