Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s ancient capitals and a major cultural destination in the Cultural Triangle. Visitors can explore vast stupas, ancient monasteries, reservoirs and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi, making the city an important stop for travellers interested in Sri Lankan history, archaeology and Buddhist heritage. Mihintale, one of Sri Lanka’s most important early Buddhist sites, is a popular nearby excursion, while the wider area also gives access to rural reservoirs, forest monasteries and routes towards Wilpattu National Park. Anuradhapura therefore works well as a base for exploring both ancient heritage and the dry-zone countryside.
