Yapahuwa is a medieval rock fortress and archaeological site in Sri Lanka’s North Western Province. Its impressive stone stairway, ruins and elevated setting make it an interesting stop for travellers exploring the country’s lesser-visited heritage sites between Kurunegala and the Cultural Triangle. Kurunegala is the nearest major city, while Dambadeniya and Panduwasnuwara provide additional medieval heritage sites in the wider region. Yapahuwa can therefore be included in an inland cultural route that explores lesser-visited former capitals, temples, reservoirs and rural landscapes away from the main tourist circuit.
