Matara District covers part of Sri Lanka’s southern coastline and includes popular beach destinations such as Mirissa. The district combines beaches, surf spots, fishing towns, temples and tropical countryside, with easy access to whale-watching excursions and other south-coast experiences. Mirissa and Weligama are major beach centres, while Matara town, Dondra Head, Polhena and Madiha add temples, surfing and quieter coastal scenery. The district can be explored as a relaxed south-coast route, with easy connections west towards Galle and east towards Tangalle.
