South Ari Atoll is one of the Maldives’ best-known areas for marine life, particularly year-round whale shark encounters in parts of the atoll. Its islands and reefs offer excellent snorkelling, diving and beach stays, with both resort islands and local-island accommodation available. Dhigurah and Maamigili are two of the atoll’s best-known local-island areas, with Dhangethi and numerous resort islands also spread through the region. The surrounding marine protected areas are especially famous for whale sharks, while manta rays, reef diving and sandbank trips are major attractions.
